Chat Editor Essentials
This course is intended as a guide to Chat Editor essentials for those supporting students using TouchChat or Nova Chat devices. Chat Editor is a Windows PC only program for customizing Chat vocabulary for AAC users. Although customizing vocabulary is possible directly on the device itself, Chat Editor conveniently allows family and/or professionals to do so when the device is not present.
In this Chat Editor Course, you will first learn where and how to download Chat Editor onto your PC. The modules will then walk you through how to use the software to back up students’ vocabulary files, customize pages, edit buttons, make adapted vocabulary strips for adapted books and create other low tech AAC materials for the classroom. The last module ties everything learned in the previous modules together so that, at the end, you will feel prepared to create your own custom pages to give your students improved curricular and social access in a more inclusive classroom. The classroom, school and home can all be made inclusive environments if our AAC users always have access to low tech AAC.
1. How to Configure Chat Editor
In this tutorial, you will learn how to download and configure Chat Editor onto your PC. Once you have successfully downloaded Chat Editor, you will be ready to start creating low tech AAC core boards and customize vocabulary files for all your AAC students.
3. How to Locate Files in Chat Editor
In the previous tutorial you learned how to transfer your vocabulary file from TouchChat directly onto your PC computer to be loaded into Chat Editor. In this tutorial, you will discover how to open Chat Editor and where to find and locate your transferred vocabulary files as well as all the TouchChat vocabulary file templates that you can use to create future resources.
4. How to Edit a Button in Chat Editor
5. How to Duplicate Your Student’s Communication File in Chat Editor
6. Chat Editor: How to Link a Page to a Button in Edit Mode
Sometimes buttons in vocabulary files can take you deeper into other pages that offer more core words based on categories. This tutorial will show you how to link an existing button to another vocabulary file template within Chat Editor. You will learn how to create deeper layers of fringe/core vocabulary based on themes and high interest motivating activities for your students.
7. How to Import Pages from a Different Vocabulary File into Your Student’s Vocabulary File
8. How to Hide a Button on a Page in Chat Editor
In this tutorial, you will learn how to hide your choice of buttons on any given pageset on your AAC device, whether it be TouchChat on an iPad or a Nova Chat. Hiding buttons reduces the distraction for our AAC users so they can focus on the core words they are working on. It also makes the page more streamlined if it is otherwise too busy for them.
9. How to Use Capture Mode in Chat Editor to Help Build Operational Competency for Your Students
AAC users develop Operational Competency when we give them the opportunity to practice navigating buttons to find their intended words on their device. The best way to help them practice is by creating sentence strips that show/model for them the pathway to follow, so that they will know where to find each word. We can incorporate these sentence strips in daily reading of story books or play a scavenger hunt game to motivate them, while allowing them to practice and build their operational competency.
11. How to Create Custom Pages in Chat Editor to Promote Inclusion in the Classroom
This tutorial focuses on how to customize your own pages in Chat Editor to specifically meet your AAC student’s needs in their classroom.
