Question:Q:Problem downloading Eclipse Java IDE
Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.
I have a pretty new iMac running 10.9.4 and I'm trying to download the Eclipse Java IDE. I download the zip file and double click on it. That creates more zip files. Also it seems to temporarily launch some application that shows up in the dock at the bottom as a green sort of file, it appears and then quickly disappears. I'm guessing that's just the unzip program running. I never get anything like a normal dialog for installing an application, a volume being mounted etc., just more zip files showing up on my desktop.

BTW, a problem I've had with other freeware is that I know the default security prohibits things not from the app store. My security preference was set to "Allow apps downloaded from Anywhere" before I downloaded anything. I'm sure I'm doing something stupid any idea what that might be?

It is more an Eclipse and Java question than an OS X question. Eclipse has some native components and must match the JDK version. I think the 32-bit is only there to support older systems. Use 64-bit.

For some reason it isn't recognizing the tarball. The Mac unarchive utility is really picky. I suggest using the command line instead.
You can download the latest SDK from Oracle. It won't hurt anything on your Mac.

Well, I've gotten farther. For some reason it seems to want you to "Open using Archive" rather than to download first as my normal default is and then open. But now I'm having another problem. It downloads and unarchives but when Eclipse starts it says it requires a new version of the Java VM: "Version 1.6.0_65 of the JVM is not suitable for this product. Version 1.7 or greater is required" is there a preferred place to download the newer JVM for OS X and do I risk messing up other apps on my Mac if I do that?

Thanks. One more minor question. Should I use the 64 bit version or the 32 bit? I'm assuming 64 bit but a site that I found that helped me figure out that opening the file immediately rather than downloading it said to use the 32 bit version regardless of if you have a 64 bit chip or not, but it didn't give a reason. The machine is a new iMac, less than a year old, so I'm assuming it's 64 bit but I can't really tell from the system info, which I've included here:
