Learn how to back up and restore apps, contacts, photos, and data on the Samsung Galaxy S8.
Back up apps
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Settings > Accounts and backup > Backup & restore.
- Tap the Back up my data slider on to back up any account data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to Google servers.
- Tap the Automatic restore on to restore backed up settings and data when re-installing applications.
Back up contacts
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data.
- Tap the services you wish to back up, then tap Back up.
Back up contacts to SD card
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Contacts > Menu > Settings.
- If necessary, tap Contacts to show > All contacts.
- Tap back into Settings> Manage Contacts > Import / Export contacts > Export > SD card.
- Review the file name for the contact list on the pop-up message.
- Tap EXPORT to confirm export.
- A message flashes at the top of the screen indicating the contacts will be exported.
Back up media & pictures
From phone
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Samsung > My Files > Internal storage.
- Tap the Menu > Share
- Select the content you want to backup, then tap Share.
- Select the location you want the content to be shared with. Once selected, a progress bar will appear until complete.
From computer - PC or Mac
- Download and install Samsung Smart Switch that is compatible with your computer from http://www.samsung.com/us/support/smart-switch-support/#!/
- Connect the cable to a compatible USB port on your computer.
- Connect the other end of the cable to your mobile device.
- Allow your computer to install any required drivers for your device. This process may take a few minutes.
- Open Smart Switch on your computer, and allow it to make the connection.
- If necessary, follow these steps:
- Touch the Status bar and drag it down.
- Tap Connected as a media device.
- Select the Media device (MTP) check box.
- On the computer, click Open device to view files.
- Navigate to the desired files on your computer:
- The Card icon is your SD card.
- The Phone icon is your device's internal storage.
- Drag and drop the files into the desired computer folder.
- When finished, safely disconnect the phone from the computer.

Restore contacts from SD card
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Contacts > Menu > Settings.
- If necessary, tap Contacts to show > All contacts.
- Tap back into Settings > Manage Contacts > Import / Export contacts > Import > Select FROM location > Select TO location > IMPORT.
- Review the file name for the contact list on the pop-up message, then tap OK.
- A message flashes at the top of the screen indicating the contacts will be imported.
Restore media & pictures
From phone
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Samsung > My Files > SD card > Menu > Edit.
- Select the checkbox next to the files your media or pictures is stored on.
- Pictures are usually stored to a DCIM file.
- Media files are usually stored in the media file.
- To move files to the main phone memory, tap Menu > Move > Internal storage > Move here.
- To move files to another location, tap the folder name (or tap Create folder), then tap Move here.
From computer - PC or Mac
