I've said it before and I'll say it again, but it's cool to be old school. And sometimes, it's even cooler to have old school roots with new school sensibilities, as with Wild Arms Alter Code: F, a complete remake of the 1997 original Wild Arms.

As mentioned, Wild Arms Alter Code: F is a complete update of the original PSOne title. New visuals, new dialogue, new characters, an altered storyline' it's all there.

From there, it's standard RPG-fare. Explore dungeons, battle, level; rinse and repeat ad nauseam. If that's how you get your kicks, then there're plenty of things to delight your swinging feet. As you'd expect from a re-make of a RPG that's nearing it's tenth anniversary, there's not a lot of revolutionary things to marvel at in Alter Code: F. The storyline, though compelling enough in its own right, is ultimately predictable and cliched. The turn-based battle system suffers from redundancy, and the random battles occur too often for my tastes, though, you are given the option to skip out on them if you so choose.

Surprisingly, the visuals, while certainly a step-up from the crude PSOne graphics, fail to impress compared to other runners in the RPG field. There's just not enough flare to it all. It's serviceable, sure, but you'd kinda expect more given that updated graphics would be the big thing to draw in fans of the original title.

The one thing to stay the same though (and with good reason) is the audio. The soundtrack is as classic as ever with sweeping and dramatic songs throughout and beautifully re-mixed tunes thrown-in.

Wild Arms Alter Code: F is your classic RPG in shiny packaging, brand-new packaging. If you're a fan of the original, it's worth re-visiting the Wild Arms world to see how things have changed, and even if you've never experienced a Wild Arms title, then this is the perfect place to start.
