The King of Evil travels back in time!

Popular as 1999’s Super Smash Bros. was, it starring a paltry twelve characters fueled countless discussions on future Nintendo all-star line-ups. While Bowser and Princess Peach were obvious suggestions, Ganondorf also topped wishlists thanks to the recent high of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Zelda‘s villain would eventually join the fray two years later in Super Smash Bros. Melee and has since become a series mainstay, but as reported by Kotaku, a dedicated modder went the extra mile by incorporating him into the original Nintendo 64 fighter! Ganondorf represents the first step for “Smash Remix“:  a mod created by Super Smash Bros. tourney operator JSsixtyfour, who seeks to further include other Nintendo favorites into the game. As seen above, Ganondorf largely mirrors his Melee appearance in functioning as a Captain Falcon clone, altering the racer’s moveset with heavier blows and darkness-tinged attacks. Of course, just like Melee, he’s not a 1:1 texture swap — his size/speed/jump/weight properties are properly re-balanced, certain moves were swapped (his familiar electric jab replaces Falcon’s multi-punch attack), and his vocalizations are ripped straight from Ocarina of Time.

JSsixtyfour notes the mod isn’t perfect; for instance, the mod entirely replaces Captain Falcon, as it’s currently easier to simply replace a character than expanding the roster. As explained on its N64 Vault page, however, JS and his team hope to eventually work around this limitation and bring together characters old and new into the N64 classic. In the meantime, not only does he show off Smash Remix at a Smash Bros. tournament in Houston this month, but you can download the mod for yourself and enjoy Ganondorf’s retroactive inclusion.
