Downloaded zip file causes lag - think, that

I have a brand new ThinkPad T450S, Core i5 with 12GB of ram.  I put Windows 10 on fresh over a month ago but I have an issue with all zip files regardless of size.  If I download one, say from Chrome, and then click the finished file to open it, Explorer completely freezes until I kill it with task manager.  If I go to the downloads folder and either double click the file, or click the big EXTRACT button on the tool bar, the same thing happens, Explorer freezes and I have to task manager kill it.  The only way to open a zip file is right clicking it and picking extract, then it works fine no problem.  Any ideas what might cause this or how to repair it?  I always forget and click the file I downloaded and then have it all freeze.  Doesn't matter if it's 500kb or 5MB, they all do it!

Just wanted to add, I know this is a specific question and prob some corrupt file or something that can only be fixed with a reinstall but just thought I'd see if anyone else was having a similar issue or if there's anything I can try to do to fix it.

As far as the specific issue goes, I can't say I can help you resolve the Explorer issue.

I CAN say that Explorer has been, and will continue to be a PoS directory browser.

Personally, for anything other than basic folder navigation I use 7-Zip. I started using it for your exact reason, difficulty with the windows solution to handling zip files. As I played with it though I found it to be an excellent directory navigator.

As a bonus, it can be added to your Ninite package for fresh installs.

Great thanks, I'll put it on and try that as I'm sure it will fix the issue since doesn't really matter to me what I use to decompress a file.

You don't need to reinstall if explorer is your issue, you can run an sfc /scannow form an administrator command prompt, or remove any 3rd party software you installed that might hook in to explorer, any addons you installed etc.

But 3rd party extraction tools are free and often work better than the standard unzip Windows includes.

Zip files and IE don't really go together. I would recommend using a third-party tool so that IE stops being the default reader.

what kind of zip software do you use? I got a 150Mb zip file on Windows10 where i keep all my funny pics in and i open & update it on a near daily base and nothing locks up. Just using the built-in zip feature...

Have you tried to restart the explorer.exe in task manager? Sure you did but thought i'd ask.

while the integrated windows zip is crap, I would definitely recommend something like 7-zip or WinRAR also, purely for the convenience of having a program that just works.

I wouldn't be installing the OS again just because, this is overkill unless you have the time to waste. start with 3rd party utility, you will probably find this will fix whatever is causing the system to glitch

Older post, but I have the same damn problem! It's so annoying, I use winrar, but still accidentally click on the zipped folder sometimes and freeze everything up.
