Problems getting at your downloads in Windows 8 can put your business into a state of limbo -- if you're unable to open documents, worksheets and programs you've been sent over the Web, then you're severely limited in the tasks you can carry out. The root cause of the issue can be problems with your browser, with the files themselves or with the security setting on your system.
Browser Problems
If you are attempting to open downloads from within your browser and something is going wrong, or the downloads are not completing correctly, a browser issue could be to blame. Uninstalling and re-installing the software -- and upgrading to the latest version at the same time -- can fix a variety of issues. Upgrading to the latest version of your chosen browser should ensure compatibility with Windows 8. Disabling any download manager extensions or add-ons could also resolve the issue. Consult the documentation supplied with your browser for instructions. If you are unable to find the folder where your downloads are located, open up this setting in your browser -- in Internet Explorer, for instance, choose "View downloads" from the Tools menu then select "Options" to see where downloads are saved.
Corrupted Files

Only unblock files if you are sure they are safe to launch and come from a trusted source, otherwise you could be putting the security of your system at risk.
Malware Problems
A malware infection could be interfering with downloaded files, preventing you from launching them successfully -- particularly if you are trying to install extra security protection for your system. Ensure your security software programs are updated to the latest available versions, then run a full system scan to look for problems. If you're using the Windows Defender software supplied with Windows 8, select "Full" as the scan type from the Home tab and click or tap "Scan now" to launch the process.
